Getting Your API Keys

How to get a NewsAPI key

A free key in under a minute for news-driven Autopilot rules — plus the licence restriction on the free plan.

What a NewsAPI key powers in Landio

NewsAPI feeds the News trending source for Autopilot rules — it's what lets a rule watch for stories in your industry and draft a post in response to what's actually happening.

It's not an AI vendor, so it isn't selectable for text, image or video generation. It's fetched by vendor rather than by generation job, and it's only relevant if you're using news-driven automation.

Creating the key

The fastest of these by a distance — no payment method, no console to learn.

  1. Go to newsapi.org and choose Get API Key.

  2. Fill in the short registration form — name, email, password, and what you're building.

  3. Your key appears on screen immediately after registering. Copy it.

The free plan's licence restriction

NewsAPI's free Developer plan is capped at a low daily request count and — more importantly — is licensed for development and non-commercial use only.

If you're running a business account and your Autopilot rules are part of commercial marketing, the free plan's terms likely don't cover you, regardless of how few requests you make. That's a licensing question, not a technical limit, and nothing will error to warn you. Read their terms and move to a paid plan if it applies to you.

Adding the key to Landio

Open AI Providers from the sidebar, find NewsAPI in the vendor list, paste the key, and save. News then becomes available as a trending source when you build an Autopilot rule.

Keys are encrypted at rest and write-only — after saving, the page only tells you that a key exists, never what it is. That also means there's no way to read a key back out of us later, so keep the copy you saved at the vendor.

Adding a key doesn't unlock a feature; it changes who bills you for it. Every plan already includes an AI allowance, so drafting works before you do any of this. With your own key, that usage bills from NewsAPI at their rates instead of counting against the allowance.

You can add more than one key per vendor. Landio will either spread calls across them or treat the extras as failover spares, depending on how you configure that vendor — useful when one key is a paid account and the rest are backups.

If something goes wrong

A rate-limit error means you've hit the free plan's daily request cap — it resets, or a paid plan raises it.

No results for a keyword usually means the term is too narrow rather than anything being broken. Broaden it and check the same query on their site.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a NewsAPI key at all?

Only if you want Autopilot rules that react to news. Everything else — drafting, scheduling, automation on other triggers — works without it.

Is the free plan enough?

Technically, for a small number of rules, yes. Legally, only if your use is genuinely non-commercial. For business use, read their licence terms rather than going by the request count alone.

Can I use a different news source?

NewsAPI is the news source we integrate today. Autopilot has other trending sources that need no key at all, so news-driven rules are one option among several.

Is it safe to paste an API key into a third-party app?

Keys are encrypted before storage and never displayed again after you save them. That said, the honest general answer is: give any third party the narrowest key you can, and keep the ability to revoke it. Where a vendor supports scoped or restricted keys, use one limited to the models Landio actually calls, and rotate it from the vendor's console if you ever stop using us.
