Getting Your API Keys

How to get an Anthropic API key (Claude)

Create a Claude API key in the Anthropic Console, fund it, and connect it — including why your Claude Pro plan doesn't count.

What an Anthropic key powers in Landio

Anthropic's Claude models handle text: captions, post copy, hooks, rewrites, and reply suggestions in the inbox. Anthropic doesn't do image or video generation, so this key covers content writing only — you'd pair it with another vendor for visuals.

Before you start

You need an account on the Anthropic Console, which is separate from a Claude.ai account even though the same email can be used for both.

Claude Pro and Claude Max are consumer subscriptions for the chat app. They include no API credit whatsoever. API usage is prepaid separately in the Console, and this trips up a lot of people who reasonably assume paying Anthropic once covers both.

Creating the key

Console access is approved immediately for most accounts.

  1. Go to console.anthropic.com and sign in or create an account. Note this is the Console, not claude.ai — the chat app has no API key page.

  2. Open Settings, then API keys. Depending on your organisation setup this may sit under an organisation menu in the top corner.

  3. Click Create Key, name it after where it will be used, and confirm. If you're asked which workspace the key belongs to, the default workspace is fine unless you're deliberately separating budgets.

  4. Copy the key — it begins with sk-ant- and is displayed only once.

Funding the key

Under Plans & Billing, add a payment method and purchase credits. Like OpenAI, the Anthropic API is prepaid: you buy a balance, and calls spend it.

Rate limits scale with your usage history, so a new account starts conservatively and loosens as you use it. For social captions you're very unlikely to hit them.

Adding the key to Landio

Open AI Providers from the sidebar, find Anthropic in the vendor list, paste the key, and save. Claude will then be available as a choice for text generation; images and video stay with whichever vendor you've selected for those.

Keys are encrypted at rest and write-only — after saving, the page only tells you that a key exists, never what it is. That also means there's no way to read a key back out of us later, so keep the copy you saved at the vendor.

Adding a key doesn't unlock a feature; it changes who bills you for it. Every plan already includes an AI allowance, so drafting works before you do any of this. With your own key, that usage bills from Anthropic at their rates instead of counting against the allowance.

You can add more than one key per vendor. Landio will either spread calls across them or treat the extras as failover spares, depending on how you configure that vendor — useful when one key is a paid account and the rest are backups.

If something goes wrong

An authentication error on a key you just made usually means it was copied short. The key is long — use the copy button rather than dragging across it.

A credit balance error means the key works but has no funds. Add credits in Plans & Billing.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Claude Pro subscription give me API access?

No. Claude Pro covers the claude.ai chat app only. API usage is a separate prepaid balance bought in the Anthropic Console, and there's no overlap between the two.

Which Claude model should I choose for social posts?

For captions and short copy, a fast mid-tier model is the right default — the writing is short and the quality difference on a two-sentence caption is small, while the cost difference over a month is not. Save the most capable model for launch copy or anything going in front of a large audience.

Can one key cover text and images?

Not with Anthropic — Claude generates text only. If you want Claude writing your captions, pair it with OpenAI, Google or xAI for images and video. Our AI Providers page lets you set a different vendor per job for exactly this reason.

Can I set a spending limit?

Yes, and you should. Because the API is prepaid, the simplest hard ceiling is just not enabling auto-reload — the balance runs out and calls stop, rather than a bill growing. Anthropic's billing settings also offer usage alerts.

Is it safe to paste an API key into a third-party app?

Keys are encrypted before storage and never displayed again after you save them. That said, the honest general answer is: give any third party the narrowest key you can, and keep the ability to revoke it. Where a vendor supports scoped or restricted keys, use one limited to the models Landio actually calls, and rotate it from the vendor's console if you ever stop using us.
